(Hurricane Season)
By Gavin Murphy

It is sudden, the loss of power.
The lights blink, then shut off completely.
Electronic devices
power down in a sudden hush.
The silence is so abrupt it roars in the ears
despite the storm outside that rampages unchecked,
knocking down trees – and power lines –
and flooding streets.
Suddenly, the buzzing sound of electricity
courses through the room.
The lights burn bright again.
The clock comes back to life,
its red diode digits flashing 12:00.
The power is back on.
A supercharged bolt of lightning illuminates the sky.
Thunder shakes the house.
The lamp lights sputter and go dark.
The diode numbers on the clock disappear...
The power is back off.
The earth trembles as the thunder rolls away,
leaving us again in the dark, hearing only the rain
relentlessly pounding the windows.
A beast that wants to enter.
The sound is frightening - and beautiful.
